Description
Tadiran XOL Series Lithium Thionyl Chloride Battery
Ultra-long-life with low pulses Batteries PROVEN to deliver up to 40-year battery life for low-power devices Tadiran XOL Series lithium thionyl chloride (LiSOCl2) batteries are ideal for low-power applications that must operate for extended periods of up to 40 years without requiring high pulses. XOL Series batteries deliver extremely high voltage (3.6 V) and high energy density (730 Wh/Kg) to support product miniaturization. These long-life cells feature very low annual self-discharge of just 0.7% per year, the result of superior raw materials and proprietary construction to harness the passivation effect.
These ruggedized cells feature the widest temperature range (-80°C to 125°C) to perform reliably under extreme environmental conditions, along with a hermetically sealed can to deliver superior leak prevention vs. crimped seals.
Technical Overview & Operation
The Tadiran XOL Series Lithium Thionyl Chloride Battery relies on a metallic lithium anode combined with a liquid thionyl chloride cathode and carbon current collector in a hermetically sealed bobbin construction.
The cell’s exceptional shelf life and minimal self-discharge are driven by the formation of a microscopic lithium chloride passivation layer on the lithium anode during storage. This passivation film virtually stops self-discharge reactions when the battery is idle, preserving chemical energy over operating lifetimes exceeding 20 years. When a current load is applied, the passivation layer breaks down, establishing a flat, stable operating open-circuit potential of $3.6 \ \text{V}$. The hermetic glass-to-metal end seal prevents electrolyte leakage and gas escape, making it ideal for severe outdoor and industrial deployments.
