Unlike airborne colorimetric tubes, the Model 331 utilizes a chemical reaction vessel to convert dissolved or particulate arsenic in a liquid/soil sample into Arsine gas ( $\text{AsH}_3$ ), which is then measured using a high-sensitivity colorimetric detector tube.

Core Operating Principle

Chemical Reduction (Gas Generation): The water or soil extract sample is placed inside the reaction bottle along with reducing reagents (zinc and acid catalyst).
Arsine Evolution: Any arsenic present (As3 + or As5) is chemically reduced to gaseous arsine ( $\text{AsH}_3$ ).
Colorimetric Detection: The evolving arsine gas passes directly through a specialized Gastec detector tube attached to the reaction vessel. The chemical reagent inside the tube changes color in proportion to the total concentration of arsenic in the sample.
