The battery’s stable Lithium Thionyl Chloride chemistry (LiSOCl2) has little to no voltage delay even in extremely low temperatures, meaning it instantly supplies its normal voltage when called upon for power no matter the conditions. Technical Overview & Operation
The Tadiran iXtra Series Lithium Thionyl Chloride Battery utilizes a metallic lithium anode combined with a liquid thionyl chloride ($SOCl_2$) cathode, housed in a hermetically sealed bobbin-style construction.
Standard bobbin-type cells develop a protective lithium chloride LiCI passivation layer during idle periods. While this passivation limits self-discharge to under 1% per year, it can cause a temporary voltage drop (voltage delay) when a high-current load is suddenly applied.
